Black Rainbow is a national volunteer-led social enterprise focused on improving mental health, emotional wellbeing, and community resilience across Australia. We work at the intersection of psychological wellbeing, prevention, education, and community support, creating safe and accessible spaces for individuals and groups navigating complex life challenges.

Originally grounded in suicide prevention, the breadth of experience within our leadership team has enabled us to broaden our focus and impact. Operating as an independent, unfunded organisation, we work through a hybrid model that includes donations, fee-for-service programs, and the development of educational resources and professional services. Our work is coordinated from Darwin, Northern Territory, and reaches communities across Australia.

Leadership

LEADERSHIP GROUP

The Black Rainbow Leadership Group brings together professionals with diverse personal and professional backgrounds in mental health, education, community development, and wellbeing. Our members are carefully selected and contribute a broad range of expertise, perspectives, and lived experience that inform our programs, strategic direction, and community impact.

Projects

PROJECTS

We deliver a range of outreach projects designed to strengthen wellbeing, connection, and community capacity. These initiatives include microgrants that support local events and gatherings, programs focused on connection and future-focused development, as well as the Black Rainbow Futures Fund. Alongside this, we develop and distribute educational resources, including our annual glossary poster series.

Research

RESEARCH

We allocate a portion of our donated resources to research focused on understanding the mental health and wellbeing impacts of COVID-related lockdowns. This work contributes to the development of a national evidence base, providing valuable insights into how large-scale social disruption affects wellbeing at a community level.

ACKNOWLEDGMENT

Black Rainbow respectfully acknowledges the traditional custodians of the lands on which we live and work. We recognise the enduring connection between people, land, and water, and we pay our respects to Elders past, present, and emerging, whose knowledge and guidance continue to shape communities across generations. We honour the individuals and communities whose experiences, resilience, and contributions have helped create pathways toward greater understanding, wellbeing, and inclusion. Their efforts have laid important foundations for the work we continue today. We also acknowledge the vital role of young people—not only as part of the future, but as active contributors to shaping it. At Black Rainbow, we believe in the capacity of young people to lead change, build healthier communities, and create more compassionate and supportive environments for themselves and others.
